Scouting America · Chicago · Since 2007
The outdoors is the classroom.
Troop 949 is a family troop in Chicago, open to boys and girls aged 11 to 17. Our scouts plan the trips, cook the meals, and run the meetings. Adults keep it safe and let them get on with it.
You do not have to belong to the parish. You do not have to have camped before.
What a scout actually does here
Not a lecture series. A year of trips, skills, and real responsibility that gets handed to the scouts themselves.
Get outdoors
Campouts most months, plus backpacking, canoeing, winter camping, and a full week at summer camp. Scouts learn to navigate, cook over a fire, and stay warm and dry when the weather turns on them.
Lead it yourself
The troop is genuinely scout-led. Patrol leaders plan the meetings, the senior patrol leader runs them, and older scouts teach the younger ones. It is the part parents notice first.
Give something back
Service projects across Chicago all year, from the annual car wash to parish and neighborhood work, and Eagle projects that leave something behind worth keeping.

The point of all of it
A Scout is…
Twelve points of the Scout Law. Every scout learns them, and the whole program is really just practice at living up to them.

Joining takes one visit
01
Come to a meeting
Turn up at 7:00 pm on a meeting Monday. No uniform, no paperwork, no commitment. Check the calendar first so you catch a meeting week.
02
Try a campout
Come on the next trip as a guest. A weekend outdoors tells you more than any meeting will, for the scout and for you.
03
Register
When everyone is happy, registration is done online and takes a few minutes. Annual dues are $50.
Bring your scout to a meeting
Every other Monday at 7:00 pm, Kernaghan Hall at St. Robert Bellarmine, 4646 N. Austin Ave. Come and see what the troop is like before you decide anything.
